Mirror of Duplication: The Illegal Item That Can Copy Anything

Buried deep in the unused assets of an unreleased Minecraft update, players discovered references to a mysterious object called the Mirror of Duplication. According to deleted internal notes, this item was tested during early beta builds in 2016 but was removed due to "instability and abuse potential."

Rumors say Mojang planned it as a debugging tool for developers to copy items instantly—but when players discovered how to access it in survival mode, it was quietly deleted from future versions.

What the Mirror of Duplication Does

When placed in an item frame or held in the off-hand, the Mirror of Duplication activates a hidden NBT function that:

  • Clones the item in your main hand every 30 seconds

  • Ignores stack limits (works on enchanted books, totems, netherite)

  • Creates a visual "mirror glitch" animation

  • Can overload chests and shulker boxes with copies

  • Triggers strange sound effects if used too many times in a row

Some users claim the mirror can even duplicate entities or mob eggs in creative mode, though this has not been confirmed.

Why It Was Removed

According to a developer Q&A from 2017 (now deleted), the Mirror of Duplication was causing serious bugs:

  • Infinite item loops

  • Crashed multiplayer servers

  • Broke redstone logic machines

  • Duplicated bugged items like barrier blocks

However, a few Minecraft archivists preserved the item’s early command structure, which can still be reconstructed using advanced tools.
