Obsidian Wings: The Legendary Item That Lets You Fly Without Elytra

Updated: July 2, 2025

A long-forgotten item known as the Obsidian Wings has resurfaced in Minecraft rumor forums. This ancient artifact was supposedly created as a test feature during the development of Elytra, but it was removed before the 1.9 Combat Update was finalized.

Some players claim to have recreated the wings using complex command blocks and leftover files from experimental snapshots.

What Are the Obsidian Wings?

The Obsidian Wings are worn in the chestplate slot and allow full creative-style flight—even in Survival mode—without fireworks, rockets, or Elytra. But they come with a twist.

When equipped, the wings:

  • Let the player fly by double-jumping

  • Slow down time during flight

  • Leave behind a trail of black particles and mini explosions

  • Turn nearby mobs passive while airborne

  • Emit a deep hum when gliding

The wings also drain experience points every 15 seconds as a “power source.” If you run out of XP, the wings shut down mid-air.

How Do You Get Them?

There’s no crafting recipe and no loot structure that contains them. The only way to access the Obsidian Wings is by generating a custom NBT command through a third-party tool designed to reconstruct lost developer items.

Use our Obsidian Wings Generator below to configure and summon your own pair.
